Learning Theory Ideology vs The Relational Model
One of the core concepts of learning based theory and ideology is the tenant that physical response aligns with and represents positive relational change or how it is defined by this group as behavior modification. Those who subscribe to the concept of behavior modification via learning are relationally blind when it comes to how a dog’s decision making process is influenced beyond the boundaries of this narrow ideological script. While physical response may align perfectly while under the influence of motivating agents and associations established within this script the core of this learning framework offers only relational half truth. Dogs can go through the motions of response while continuing to objectify the owner. This relational disconnect follows the path of behaviorism with Skinner’s theological tenant that the external would reveal the internal or cognitive. What was born from this one dimensional study was incomplete and flawed. This is where learning based concepts such as counter conditioning often become associative and supply source based instead of representative of proper relational alignment. Learning ideology via behavior modification focuses on behavior as an independent issue separate apart from relational influence of the pack relationship and hierarchy. The issues related to why learning ideology breaks down for some at certain relational intersecting points are predicable and consistent. The relational risk factor for any given learning model can be evaluated based on both the ideology being promoted and the specific methodology used. While some of these relational interplays may be difficult for many to grasp a frame of reference can be established by studying the parenting model. Many of the issues associated to the break down of learning theory can be better understood within the context of the permissive model.
